Kalamunda Hills Ride:

Please note that participation in this cycle ride is done so entirely at your own risk. The Kirby Swim Triathlon Squad, or its coach (Paul Newsome), cannot be held responsible for any injury, accident, or death caused by your choice to ride with the group. Every effort has been made to ensure that the directions for this ride are correct. Please arrange a ‘buddy’ with whom you will ride with and each take care of the other. In the event of any accident or someone getting lost, please call Paul on 0431 540 980 for assistance / directions. It is suggested that we shall have two groups (fast and not-quite-so-fast) operating once we get to the service station on Toodjay Rd as per last week. Paul will nominate a leader in each group. Please look after your fellow group members – if you get ‘dropped’, then the directions below will help you find your way. This is a social, informal ride – so please have fun, but be safe and abide by the normal rules of the road! Thankyou.

1. Meet South Side of Narrows Bridge at 6.20am for a 6.30am start, and head north over bridge and onto cycle path heading east.
2. Pass under the Narrows and continue past Bell Tower towards the Causeway (all on cycle path).
3. Ride under Causeway and immediately after take a right turn sign posted ‘Maylands’. Follow to next t-junction and turn right.
4. Follow cycle path into ‘dockland area’ housing estate and take a right turn over footbridge. Follow straight up Henry Lawson Street and take a left onto Kensington Street at roundabout.
5. Take a right onto East Parade at the lights and proceed over two sets of lights towards East Perth train station where you should take up the cycle path again.
6. Follow cycle path adjacent to Railway Parade for about 3.0k until you get to Maylands train station where you have to hop back onto the road (Whatley Crescent) until you approach Bayswater train station where you take a quick left and immediate right under the railway line onto Railway Parade.
7. Railway Road becomes Beechboro Road South and then Embelton Avenue as you make your way over Collier Road lights, taking a right onto Broun Avenue at the next set of lights.
8. Follow this road through several sets of lights till you get to a t-junction and turn left onto Lord Street (20.0k). Follow for a while and take a right at the Benara Road roundabout.
9. Follow this road for about 3.0k past the vineyards on either side and take a left onto West Swan Road at about 24.0k. Take a right onto Middle Swan road at the next set of lights and proceed carefully along the busy, narrow road to the intersection of Roe Highway.
10. Pass straight through these lights and take a left onto Toodjay Road at the 30.0k point, shortly followed by a right onto Lewis Cross Road at the service station and then immediate left onto Farral Road at the first roundabout. This is the start of the stepped climb (~20.0k!), so pace yourself!
11. Take a left on Morrison Road at the roundabout after the first stage of the climb and climb the steep gradient until the t-junction of Swan View Road and take a right. At the next t-junction take a left onto Old York Road where the climb kicks up again before taking a left onto the dual carriageway for about 1.0k and take the second right turn onto Darlington Road. Be careful, this carriageway is always busy!
12. After another short climb you will descend rapidly through the sweeping turns, but be careful not to miss the right turn onto Coulston Road at the bottom!
13. Ride over the first roundabout onto Marriott Road and then take a left at the next t-junction, riding over the next roundabout and finally taking a left at the second t-junction onto Helena Valley Road. Turn right at the next roundabout to start a long climb up along Ridgehill Road.
14. At about the 46.0k mark there is a left turning which is sign-posted ‘no entry’ as the road forks off up the infamous “Zig Zags” which are about 5.0k in length, but an easy gradient.
15. Follow the zig-zags all the way up taking care of oncoming vehicles coming down the narrow road as they have right of way. After what seems like an age (especially if you are not a great climber) you will start to ride into ‘civilisation’ and as you crest the top of the climb look out for Gooseberry Hill Road on your right. Take this turning and immediately turn left onto Railway Road. Several hundred metres on your right will be a group of shops where we shall meet at Le Croissant Café, at approximately 8.45am.
16. Chance to grab a coffee and cake, whereupon we shall proceed back to Perth following Welshpool Road as a large group. If you are not at the café by this point (9am) or think you may have missed us, please call me on my mobile 0431 540 980 to arrange a meet-up.
17. From the café turn right back onto Railway Road, go over all the roundabouts in Kalamunda until you come to a t-junction with Canning Road and turn left.
18. Take a right at the third roundabout onto Pomeroy Road and follow this until you get to the t-junction with Welshpool Road. Turn right here and follow Welshpool Road down the hill (very fast – so be careful!). Follow through all the intersections until you come to Kewdale Road and turn left, followed by a right back onto Welshpool Road.
19. Follow along Welshpool until it blends into Albany Highway and then follow this road through Victoria Park, picking up the cycle path at the Causeway. Follow the original cycle path back along Riverside Drive and to the Narrows Bridge.
